Sunday actually started really well! I did some house chores and cleaning, then had a great time playing Sketch Heads with some friends. I started to draft a review on Alpha and Omega and was brainstorming the name for a new character in my writing.
My mum said she was going to go down to my grandmother’s flat and take care of her ear, so I could just relax and listen to my ruff-raff music loudly. Half-way through GDFR, I received a somewhat panicked phone call.
From mum.
Because my grandmother had a seizure in the kitchen.
My spotted training kicked straight in. I gathered my medication and diabetes supplies, mum’s medication, my laptop, mum’s tablet – in the hopes that our Cat Camera in my grandmother’s kitchen might have caught something, drank a glass of apple juice for energy, changed clothes, and ran down the stairs and the 200m to my grandmother’s flat. In about 4 minutes. I beat the paramedics there, and they had sirens!
She was a bit disoriented and dizzy, but overall she seemed to be mostly alright. Still, she needed to be taken to hospital. And so, the rest of Sunday was spent at Saint Francis. The doctor said that the seizure was a result of a combination of her dementia (which can cause seizures – no one told us that…) and an electrolyte imbalance caused by dehydration. It’s been hot and she has been outside a lot lately. Too much, apparently.
It was a relief that it wasn’t too serious, though it was still quite an ordeal. And it makes me a bit more nervous about her continued safety; if she had a seizure alone, she could fall into something and really hurt herself. This is going to need to be thought about really closely.
I drove us all home just after midnight. Everyone was calmed down and settled by around 2:30. I took a breath. I was doing a little bit of writing before bed to wind down when my concentration was suddenly broken.
By a weather alert tone.
For a tornado warning.
Thankfully, it was a quick spin-up in a rural area. No one was hurt, and no damage was reported. Still, this just felt like the perfect send-off for such a hectic, broken day. Mondays are rarely my favourite, but I will take this one happily just to be done with that Sunday.
Thank goodness everything ended well!
