This is a list of every single media that I could find that features a Dalmatian as a character. Note that this does not include characters that dress up as Dalmatians, pretend to be Dalmatians, or are revealed later on to not be Dalmatians. It does include mixed-breed dogs that are part Dalmatian as long as that partial lineage is canonical. (Fan speculation does not count.)
Also, I have not yet seen every single one of these. Inclusion on this list does not imply endorsement. I am including even the known terrible films, i.e. the ones from Dingo Pictures. It’s important for me to include all media, even bad ones. I’ll try to note them when I’m aware.
TV series
1986-1989: Pound Puppies (TMDB, IMDb), American animated series about a group of dogs at a dog pound that help puppies find their forever homes. This is the original one, which I haven’t seen yet. I did like the 2010 version, so I assume this should be good too. Will update when I see it.
1997-1998: 101 Dalmatians: The Series (TMDB, IMDb), American-Korean animated series about the wacky adventures of Pongo and Perdita’s puppies. The main focus is on just a few (Lucky, Cadpig, and Rolly), but many more are referenced, cameoed, and alluded to. This was one of my favourite series growing up. Has a great mix of humour and heart.
1998-1999: The Secret Files of the Spy Dogs (TMDB, IMDb), American-Korean animated series about a team of secret agent dogs. One of the lead agents is said to be a Dalmatian. I haven’t seen this yet, but I want to.
1999-2003: Hoze Houndz (TMDB, IMDb), Canadian animated series about a group of firefighter Dalmatians. I’ve seen a single episode. The animation is not especially high quality IMO, but the writing is actually good. I wouldn’t mind seeing more.
2006-2020: Little Princess (TMDB, IMDb), British animated series about a spoiled princess learning to be less spoiled. Her dog is a purebred Dalmatian. Critical reaction seems to be mixed, some liking and some disliking. I haven’t seen any episodes so I don’t have an opinion yet.
2007-2012: Finley the Fire Engine (TMDB, IMDb), American animated series about a child fire engine and his adventures in the town of Friendlyville. Scout is the brigade’s Dalmatian. I’ve seen a little bit of this and it seemed to be pretty good, but I haven’t seen enough to form an opinion yet.
2008-2025: Fireman Sam (TMDB, IMDb), Welsh animated series about a fire brigade’s adventures saving the town of Pontypandy. I dated this to 2008 because the original stop motion series did not include Radar the Dalmatian; really, it has run since 1987. Heartwarming and comedic. I love this one, and not just because I’m partially Welsh!
2009-2011: Doggy Day School (TMDB, IMDb), Brazilian animated series about a group of dogs, including a Dalmatian, that learn lessons as they grow together. This one seems to be beloved in its home country, but it has never been shown outside Brazil and Canada, so I haven’t seen it yet.
2010-2013: Pound Puppies (TMDB, IMDb), American animated series about a group of dogs at a dog pound that help puppies find their forever homes (or in series parlance, their Perfect Person). I really enjoyed this series. A Dalmatian pup named Patches shows up in Series 2 and joins the Super Secret Pup Club, alongside Rebound and Cupcake.
2011-2015: Poppy Cat (TMDB, IMDb), British animated series about a preschooler that imagines her animals go on fantastical adventures. Seems to be well loved, favourably compared with Kipper and Bluey. I have been assured that Zuzu is in fact a stuffed Dalmatian. (No offence, but with the shape of his ears, he looks a bit like a cow!) Definitely on my watch list.
2012-: Chicago Fire (TMDB, IMDb), American live-action series about firefighters in Chicago. Yes, there was actually a Dalmatian featured in series 7 through 9, named Tuesday. She was adorable. This isn’t quite Emergency!, but it’s also not necessarily trying to be. I’ve only seen a few of the episodes with Tuesday in them but it’s overall a good series if you’re into this sort of thing.
2013-2019: Doki (TMDB, IMDb), Mexican-Canadian animated series about a Dalmatian named Doki and his friends that explore the world and go on adventures. I’ve heard a lot of (positive) comparisons between this and Dora the Explorer, so I have high hopes for it.
2013-: PAW Patrol (TMDB, IMDb), American animated series about a group of first-responder puppies that save the town, Adventure Bay, from certain destruction. Marshall, a klutzy Dalmatian, is the fire dog. The first few series were actually enjoyable, but the quality went lower as time went on. It’s barely recognisable, and in my humble opinion, barely watchable, by the time we have dinosaurs and mermaids everywhere. It’s a dog version of SpongeBob SquarePants, to be blunt.
2018-2023: Bluey (TMDB, IMDb), Australian animated series about a family of Blue Heelers. One of Bluey’s friends, Chloe, is a Dalmatian. Absolutely and unequivocally recommend watching this one to anyone and everyone, even though Chloe only appears in 16 episodes. Fun trivia: Her house number is actually 101 – which calls to mind another series!
2019-2020: 101 Dalmatian Street (TMDB, IMDb), British-American animated series about a family of Dalmatians living in Camden Town, London. Speaking of houses numbered 101… this is on my list of all-time favourite pieces of media. I cannot possibly understate this. It ranks with the original 1961 film and North by Northwest. It isn’t a marvel of writing. It isn’t the most breathtaking story development. It isn’t the most eye-catching animation. But it has it. It has feeling. It has personality. It has heart. I am genuinely captivated.
2019-2021: Clifford (TMDB, IMDb), American animated series about the Big Red Dog himself. I saw the original one, and apparently in the reboot Tucker has become a Dalmatian. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve heard great things, and I know the original was a joy to watch, so I have a pretty good idea that this is going to be a good one too, when I get around to seeing it.
2021-2022: The Chicken Squad (TMDB, IMDb), American animated series about a group of chickens and a Husky that save animals in peril. The Husky has a Dalmatian friend. I haven’t seen this one yet.
2023-: Pupstruction (TMDB, IMDb), American-Italian animated series about a group of puppies that build things to help the people of Petsburg. The Mum of the lead Corgi, Phinny, is Maya the Dalmatian, who also runs the construction company. One of my friends described her as “Delilah if she had a career change”. He wasn’t far off either, haha. I do admit to enjoying this one a lot, though I haven’t seen all of it. I caught it when it followed Bluey at 4 a.m. on Disney Channel, on nights when I was still awake then. I’m hoping to watch the complete series in earnest soon.
Film
1961: One Hundred and One Dalmatians (TMDB, IMDb), American animated feature about a family of Dalmatians that is dognapped by a fashion designer for use of their spotted coats. You know, for kids! I kind of can’t believe how much I love this film considering the excerpt I just wrote, but if you haven’t seen it, trust me, it’s an amazing film.
1990: The Rainbow Thief (TMDB, IMDb), British live-action feature about a crook that tries to fleece the heir to a fortune. The heir has a Dalmatian. I have not seen this one yet, but it seems at least in the realm of genres I’d watch anyway.
1996: 101 Dalmatians (TMDB, IMDb), American-British live-action remake of the 1961 animated feature. Watch the original.
1997: The Dalmatians (TMDB, IMDb), German animated feature about a group of Dalmatian puppies going missing. Notoriously horrible, but I haven’t seen it for myself.
1997: Dog Years (TMDB, IMDb), American live-action feature about a skinhead who’s only friend in the world is his Dalmatian. Somehow, she is stolen by mobsters, and he goes on a quest to get her back. I haven’t seen this one either, yet, but it’s the highest up on this list for me.
2000: 102 Dalmatians (TMDB, IMDb), British live-action feature sequel to the 1996 live-action film. One of the pups has had pups of her own. Cruella is back to cause more mayhem. This one was more enjoyable for me than the 1996 release. I’ve only seen the 1996 release once; I’ve seen this one three times over my life.
2003: 101 Dalmatians II: Patch’s London Adventure (TMDB, IMDb), American-Japanese animated feature about one of Pongo and Perdita’s puppies feeling less than special since he has so many littermates. Really sweet story; it’s a good one. I plan on rewatching it again this winter and writing a full-on review.
2007: Firehouse Dog (TMDB, IMDb), American-Canadian live-action feature about a Hollywood dog that accidentally becomes a fire brigade’s mascot. The main dog isn’t actually a Dalmatian, but there are two Dalmatians in various places around. Included here for completeness; Dals aren’t the focus. Still a decent watch, though.
2019: Trouble (TMDB, IMDb), Canadian-American animated feature about a rich dog who has to adjust to life outside of a mansion. One of the strays he meets is a rapping Dalmatian named Otis. Haven’t seen this one yet.
2022: Fireheart (TMDb, IMDb), French animated feature about a girl who wants to be a firefighter in 1920s New York City. Her dog Ember is a Dalmatian, and she is actually well involved in the plot. I have a detailed review on this blog, but in short, it’s a great film and I highly recommend it.
