Today is a special day all around Northeast Oklahoma, because our phone code is 918 and the US shorthand for the day is 9/18. But the 18th of September is special for our family for a different reason. Today is Melody’s gotcha day!
Five years ago today, I walked in to a local veterinary clinic to pick out a kitten to adopt from a litter that was found abandoned. There were two main candidates from online: Pickles, and Punkin. We sat with each one. Pickles was really cute with white fuzzy paws, but Punkin spoke to me – literally. She meowed in what sounded like a song. And that is how she earned her name: Melody. Her full name is Melody Punkin, I suppose, since we still call her that sometimes. But mostly, she’s Melody.
