Art! Maybe the last ever from my Power Mac

If you’re looking for the art, scroll down! This is also a tech post, unfortunately.

Since today is my all-nighter, I’m quite tired, but I wanted to clean up the art I did Thursday and post it here. Really, it was just the speech bubbles that needed to be re-outlined. I was almost finished, and then:

Disk error -36 occurred while reading or writing to a scratch disk. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable.

Photoshop, and Finder, then pinwheeled. The only thing I could do was turn off the Power Mac G5 and turn it back on. I saved after the first speech bubble, but the second and third were toast. Now, normally this wouldn’t be a big deal. Glitches happen. But, this is the second time this has happened. It happened once on Thursday, which I relegated to being a glitch.

The disk is a brand new 500 GB SSD with 468 GB free, and it has 4 GB of RAM that just passed a memory test. So, I do not believe this is a failure of the disk or memory. And since this used to be glen.foxkit.us at one point, as mentioned before, I remembered the actual reason he was retired. Yes, the GPU was failing, but the other thing that was happening was the SSD was acting like it was failing. It would randomly throw EIO errors in Linux and remount r/o.

This is a completely separate SSD. I think it may actually be the disk controller, which would mean a full-on logic board replacement. I don’t have that kind of time, and I also don’t have that kind of money. If I were to find a donor Mac to replace the logic board, I’d probably just put the disk, RAM, and GPU in that Mac.

Unfortunately, this means that the first full art piece I’ve ever completed, will also be the very last art piece I will complete on this computer. I’m sad, because I was really looking forward to using a Power Mac to make my art. But, I do have a replacement. I have an iMac from 2011 that runs Snow Leopard and has a (legit licensed!) Adobe CS5 install on it.

Which is to say, my digital art hobby can continue, just not quite in the shape I was hoping it to take. And that’s fine. I am happy to use that computer, as it has a lot of sentimental value as well. Still, maybe I can find a way to use my Power Mac G4 for art in some way…

Anyway. Without further ado, I present my very first completed art piece: Oops!.

"Oops!", 2026, Anna "Spots" Wilcox. If uploading to a booru (e621, derpi, et c.), please credit the artist as Spots, and also lightf4lls for the background!

It appears that Twilight Sparkle (of Friendship is Magic) has met Triple D (of 101 Dalmatian Street) in Ponyville. No one is quite sure how they ended up there, but her magic went haywire and turned her dragon friend Spike into a Dalmatian, and Triple D into ponies! And of course, Destiny is just wondering if she can find foxes in the Everfree Forest.

It’s a silly concept, inspired by a conversation I was having with a friend where pink ponies and Dalmatians came up at the same time. I thought it would make a cute scene!

I’m going to try and set up the iMac tomorrow, and maybe I’ll try to get a quick pic or even do a ten minute sketch to show it in action. Or maybe I will just write. I didn’t get to write at all over the weekend and I have a lot of ideas!
