Rough drafts of the family…

After fits and starts since February, I have finally drawn a draft of a few of the characters from my graphic novel series!

This is Daffodil:

A drawing of Daffodil, a Dalmatian wearing a yellow collar with black ears.
Daffodil McDot, a Dalmatian wearing a yellow collar with black ears and a pattern of spots resembling a flower on her head.

She has a yellow collar in keeping with her flower theme. It’s hard to make out in this angle, but she has a pattern of spots on the crown of her head that make a flower shape as well. I’m not entirely happy with the shape of her face in this draft, but this is what I ended up with. Also, note her pure black ears.

And here’s a rough sketch of her laying between two other Dalmatians, Delilah on the left and Dave on the right!

A sketch of three Dalmatians.
Three sibling Dalmatians. Left-to-right: Delilah, sitting down, wearing a blue collar with a cyan-green medical ID badge as a pendant; Daffodil, laying between the two, wearing a mostly-obscured yellow collar; Dave, sitting down, wearing a red collar with a black computer key (“D”) hanging off his collar as a pendant.

You can see Daffodil’s flower pattern better at this angle. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to draw their bodies at these angles. Honestly, this is all really early draft stuff. I still wanted to share something, especially since I’m really excited to finally have Daffodil out of my head and on a (digital) canvas of some sort! She’s an important character in my stories. I look forward to being able to introduce not only the way she looks as I continue to refine these drafts, but her personality as well through my writing.

I’ve also left the colour window open in Fresco which is meant to act as the colour swatches I usually see on ref sheets. I’m pretty happy with her collar and eye colour and would call these “canonical”.
